The phone box ads started appearing in phone boxes in the early 80's, and are the means by which prostitutes advertise their services in London. Unfortunately, a change in the law makes it difficult for the 'card boys' as they are called, to place them without being prosecuted, so their number has diminished considerably. At one time phone boxes used to be full of them, and British Telecom used to remove about a million a year from booths.

The big problem with the cards were that not only did we have these cutesy drawings, we also had porn lifted straight out of magazines re-printed and put in a phone box, these cards in the West End would start at Waist level and continue to ceiling height on four sides. As there was so much competition the ads got more extreme. Every phone box was a mini porn emporium inside and out, It made Theatre land, Piccadily, Trafalgar Square, the City, look shite. Its not about freedom of expression, and people being prudes It was and still is a gross infringment on the pedestrian public, tourists with children, londoners with children being confronted with this kind of material every 20yards or so. People didn't use phone boxes because they felt awkward, be they male or female. There was also a problems with these cards ending up on notice boards as a prank at work, or being pinned up in pubs while the landlord wasn't looking, then there were those cardmen that would remove the competitions cards creating pools of porn all over the pavements and gutters. Just to have other cardmen come back and re-card the box.
i LOVE those ads Hope to be going back to UK next year and shall be following up on some of those ads lolJakefrustratedmystic@yahoo.com.au
graeme, thanks for the clarification. I forgot that kids and unwilling members of the public would also be confronted with these cards. The banning of this material from phone boxes makes more sense now. Thanks for commenting:)PS: With cell phones, how popular are phone boxes nowadays? How long will it be before someone comes out with a way of texting ads like these to people's mobiles??
People go into phone boxes with there mobiles because its quieter. Also with de-regulation phone boxes get used by those with international calling cards, the upshot is they are still used a lot. As for text adverts to mobiles, its already here just not "personal services" as yet. I would imagine that there would be an outcry if ads like this started being spammed out, huge numbers of children have mobiles in the UK, and as far as I know there is no way to discriminate between an adults phone or a childs, case in point my son has received the same text ads telling him to phone a premium rate No because he has won a prize, Its a scam that costs you upto £20 a minute. And phones are already a major problem for kids as they attract muggers. As it goes you can get soft porn texts/walpapers/videos sent to your phone if you subscribe to Jamster or sportxxx or the like. Personally I don't think I could watch a video clip from a phone with one hand whilst "knocking one out" with the other. So I guess the answer is the technology is there but no ones combined softporn and text as indiscriminate advertising yet. However as 3G services drop in price it will probably happen.Dear oh lor this is well off topic, I'm sounding really tedious.Ttfn.
Aww Graeme, that wasn't tedious at all! I found your follow-up comment very interesting. Thanks for all the info!!
